About John Haney

Before Trivial Pursuit, I was a goalie, an actor, a house manager, and, briefly, a slaughterhouse hand. I took the long way to the thing people know me for.

John Haney, co-creator of Trivial Pursuit and author of My Trivial Pursuits.

John Haney is a co-creator of Trivial Pursuit, one of the most successful board games in history.

Born in Maidenhead, England, in 1946, he emigrated to Canada aboard the RMS Queen Mary, the son of a Canadian soldier and an English war bride. He was raised in Welland, Ontario, and attended Colgate University in upstate New York on a hockey scholarship, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree.

After a tryout with the Los Angeles Kings, he went on to play goal professionally in Austria and Denmark, and was named best goaltender while representing Great Britain at the 1976 Group C World Championship.

He has also appeared on stage at the Stratford Festival and in a Hollywood film.

In the late 1970s, alongside his brother Chris and partners Scott Abbott and Ed Werner, he co-created Trivial Pursuit, which became a global phenomenon, selling tens of millions of copies and becoming a defining part of popular culture.

Haney is the author of My Trivial Pursuits, an inside account of the game's creation and its transatlantic journey from idea to international success.

He and his wife, Velvet, live on a farm north of Toronto.

The whole story is in the book.

My Trivial Pursuits is John Haney's firsthand account of the long, unlikely road to one of the best-selling games ever made.
